The Deryck Panton Summer Championship Tournament

The 2019 Moment’s annual club championship delivered an abundance of great golf in all three flights. This tournament, which is a gross tournament (handicaps are not figured in the final results) was held at The Wind Watch golf course in Hauppauge, NY. The course gave trouble to many of the golfers, but was easily conquered by the eventual winners: Norman Young (flt. 1), Winston Searchwell (flt. 2), and Michael McKenzie (flt. 3).

Flight I winner: NORMAN YOUNG

An opening round 84 left Norman (bottom left) two strokes behind first round leader Dorrel Allen. But Young followed up his 84 with an 82 and an 81 and held off attacks from Mark Green, Dorrel Allen, and eventual 2nd place finisher Wajid Ali. Norman’s victory in this tournament comes after his winning low gross in the Winter tournament in Florida. He remains one of the clubs best players.

Flight II winner: WINSTON SEARCHWELL

Winston Searchwell (right) finished the first round of the tournament like the great race horse Secretariat. He blazed through the first 18 holes with an 80, the lowest score of any player in the entire tournament. With a 10 stroke lead going into the final two rounds, it was going to be difficult for anyone to catch him, and no one did. Laxton Lewis made his presence known with a third round 85, but it left him in second place, 1 stroke short of Winston. It seems that to Winston, who is the senior most member of the club, age is about mind over matter – if you don’t mind, it doesn’t matter.

Flight III winner: MICHAEL MCKENZIE

The 2017 Fall tournament winner has done it again. Michael McKenzie, who led his flight throughout the tournament, shot a strong third round 91 to hold off challengers Garnett Sullivan and Carl Lewis and won the flight III championship. Michael and Garnett were the only flight III players to break 100 on all three rounds.
