Good Times at the Miami Tournament

With chilly weather keeping many New York golfers home, 42 Moments members turned out for its winter tournament in Miami. And while windy conditions challenged many of the golfers, warm weather, blue skies, and wonderful camaraderie more than made up for it. Three beautiful golf courses challenged players.

      FLIGHT I

The Flight I winner played like his name: Pro. Norman ‘Pro’ Pryce (photo below) would not be denied victory. His consistent and sometimes brilliant shot making led to an10 stroke win over runner up Rubin Shirodkar. In third place, two strokes behind Rubin was perennial favorite and the winner of the Summer tournament, Norman Young. Pryce never wavered during the three day tournament, shooting gross scores of 85, 83, and 83. After his final putt at the 18th green, the well-liked ‘Pro’ was warmly congratulated by his competitors. A great victory by a great player.

The best scratch score from Flight I was an 81, shot by Wajid Ali.

FLIGHT III

This was no contest. Trevor Salkey, like the great Secretariat, was the class of the field. His 19 stroke victory opened the eyes of his competitors. Trevor said, “I hit about 400 balls a day. I went to Miami expecting to win because if I didn’t, Tiger Bramble would be on my case.” Strong words from a strong player.

Fred Williams continues his fine play (1st place net in the Summer tournament) and put up three good scores to came away with a second place finish. Third place was claimed by Carl Lewis, who continues to put himself near the top of most tournaments. Carl won last years Spring tournament and was Best Dressed in the Summer tournament.

    FLIGHT II

Flight II produced a battle of the Floridians as Sam Williams from Orlando, and Wayne Willoughby (photos below) from Tampa finished tied for first and had to enter into a playoff. Because Wayne had to catch a plane, the two players agreed to break with tie with a putt-off. A 60 foot putt was measured off on the practice putting green. After both players two-putted in the first round, a second round was played. Wayne missed his second putt and three-putted, while Sam made his second putt and claimed his Flight II championship.

Lost in this excitement was the battle for third place between Anthony Daniel and Laxton Lewis. Both finished 12 over par and tied for third. Lewis continues to flirt with victory. In the last five tournaments he’s finished 3rd, 1st Gross, and 2nd. It’s only a matter of time…
